Abstract

In 2020, the Departamento de Vialidad of the Araucanía Region requested and supervised the development of a design for a detachable metal bridge (consultancy SAFI: 325.137, ID: 2261-65-O120). Among the specifications, it was defined that the bridge should be modular, with a minimum length of 25.0 m, a width of 5 m, designed for an AASHTO HS25 truck, and without any individual elements larger than 3.50 m or heavier than 2 tons.

The resulting design was a modular panel-type bridge. The panels are 3.50 m long and 2.00 m high. They can be combined into 3 to 8 modules, achieving total lengths between 10.50 m and 28.0 m. The panels are connected to each other by transverse beams of 6.34 m. Floor modules, individually bolted and measuring 3.50 m long and 1.00 m wide, are installed on these beams. Optionally, a pedestrian walkway 1.00 m wide can be installed.

The main advantages include the modular concept, ease of assembly and maintenance, and the fact that expropriations are not required to replace wooden bridges. A disadvantage identified is the inability to take advantage of material savings that designs based on strength testing allow.

Finally, it is concluded that the design is the first step in an innovation process that should continue based on the experience gained during the construction and operation stages, and it should be added to the alternatives of the Highway Department for temporary minor bridges.
