Temporary “double A” bridges, reusing Flat Rack Containers from the maritime transport industry
Keywords:
Bridges Temporary, Connectivity, SustainabilityAbstract
Secondary roads in Chile are vitally important for overall development, and permanent connectivity is essential. According to the research carried out, there are a large number of small bridges, most of which are made of wood, and a large percentage of them are in poor condition. The objective of this work is to propose a solution of sustainable temporary bridges to replace wooden bridges. These are low cost, eliminate the use of wood, reduce construction times, and increase durability. It would also allow for the connection of territories that are separated by estuaries or minor geographical features, where there is currently no connectivity. A third line of use is to maintain connectivity during the repair or replacement of larger bridges. This sustainable solution is based on the reuse of an element known as a flat rack container, used for transporting heavy or oversized loads. The methodology used was based on analyses of the strength and technical characteristics of these elements, both from the manufacturers and using software such as SAP 2000, in addition to the design of complementary prefabricated elements. Three bridge models are presented, depending on the need. Substantive advantages are seen compared to existing alternatives (wooden bridges or concrete boxes) in different areas, including economics, the environment, availability of materials, reuse, and sustainability.
