Abstract

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the road, along with major real estate development in rural areas. This situation has had a direct impact on road operations, creating new points of conflict in terms of road safety. This raises the need to provide road users with more and better information related to traffic accidents, road works, hazardous weather conditions, or the presence of vulnerable users. The objective of this study is to describe the characteristics, uses, advantages, and challenges of different electronic devices designed to deliver this type of information, as well as to identify future challenges associated with their implementation and operation. The methodology used consists of describing the experience of using the following devices: light beacon for speed control at 30 km/h, speed radar, dynamic signal in school zones, smart crosswalk, smart intersection, variable message sign, and light signal for weather conditions. Based on the description and comparative analysis of the advantages of each device, it is concluded that, in general, they adequately fulfill the function of dynamically informing about various risk situations. However, their effectiveness depends on their integration into a comprehensive road safety project, since their isolated implementation does not achieve the desired effect. It has also been observed that, over time, some of these devices stop working or malfunction. In conclusion, electronic devices should be part of a comprehensive road safety approach and not be installed in isolation, as this limits their effectiveness. In addition, they require proper maintenance to ensure continuous, reliable, and effective operation over time.
