Analysis of Desing Consistency on National Routes in the Province of Cordoba

Based on traffic information and speeds provided by DNV (permanent stations and coverage censuses from the 2010-2017 period of la Dirección Nacional de Vialidad), 9 road segments crossing the province of Córdoba (Argentina) were selected, on which the design consistency was reviewed in relation to drivers' speed and trajectory expectations. To do this, the difference between the expected speed (85th percentile), the design speed (Vd or guideline), and the expected reduction in V85 between different elements of the horizontal alignment was determined. The analysis was conducted using the IHSDM (2021) v17.0.0 – DCM v7.0.0 (Interactive Highway Safety Design Model – Design Consistency Module) from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
The geometry of the analyzed sections corresponds to Category II: 1500 < TMDA < 5000, according to DNV (except for one section with 6,560 veh/day), on flat terrain (i ≤ 3%). For isolated elements (Criterion I), there was significant variability in the V85 estimate for horizontal curves with radii smaller than the absolute minimum according to DNV design standards. It was also found that the greatest speed differences with respect to V85 occurred when comparing the design speed (Vd) per standard (120 km/h), with smaller differences observed when comparing with the in-situ posted maximum speed. Regarding the analysis for successive elements (straight-curve, Criterion II), no clear relationships were found between low and/or medium speed variations based on horizontal curve radii, whether considering Vd or posted maximum speed.
