Abstract

This work is carried out to provide more efficient protection schemes for steel used in various structures. The research is divided into two parts. First, it reviews the factors that directly affect the durability of steel, which are classified into atmospheric, water contact, and soil contact factors, and how the properties of these elements affect the steel differently. The second part focuses on studying four different types of steel protection: galvanizing, Magnelis®, corten, and galvanized + paint systems. Finally, a recommendation table for protection systems is proposed based on the climatic and contact conditions to which the steel will be exposed. This information is supported by a literature review and results from salt fog tests on galvanized steel and the galvanized + paint system, also presented in this research.
